19AT091 Interview
Posted on Thursday, February 17 @ 20:13:49 EST by 30DX010

Interviews 30kr239 writes: "
As some of you probably know,
Erik 19AT091 has been building
his own antennas for long time so
he has got a wide experience
playing with them.

We asked him to reply to some
of our question and he kindly said ok.
From dxhunters.com we´d like to
say him thanks very
much for his time.
Hope you like what he told us. 73s

- Age:  34

- Location: Zeeland (Netherlands)

- When and how did you start on the radio?: I started on 1990

- Working conditions?: kenwood ts 850 sat and 9el yagi {24 meter boom - almost 80fts-} plus 7el quad
{boom 11.4 - 37.40 fts} at the moment

- Do you have any project for the future to improve your radio station?  maybe I will
build a system with a couple of 9 elements (long boom) stacked yagis

- How is your location for dxing? I think it´s a good location and my yagis help me out a lot

- Do you have any country wich is hard to confirm by your side?
Not sure, maybe 276-266-265-288 div.

- Do you think Internet has been an advance for radio? I think tools as cluster.dk makes things easier to work new divisions

Let´s gonna talk about antennas. Erik, you have had some experiences with home made antennas.
Looking at photo sections on this web we can see one ¨monster yagi¨ (24 meters of boom length)
and another delta loop as well...

I have made more than 20 yagis, only 1 delta loop with the help of 30AT 252 Pepe and 3 cubical quad's.
Now I have 2 tower's: a self supported 10 meter (30ft) only and a rotable tower with an elevator platform
who goes from 1,3 to 23 meters (1ft to 75.45ft) with the rotor down in the base.
When I make 2 antennas and with this configuration I can easily compare both antennas at same height of
10 meters (30ft)
At the moment my current system is running by a 9 elements 24 meter boom (80ft boom length) and a 7el.
cubical quad with ¨only¨ 11,4 (37.40ft) meter of boom
I work or try to improve my antenna system every 4 weeks and I´m working on a web page with many photos
of the antennas that I hope to upload soon on Internet.

- Acording to your experience, What´s your opinion about that famous thread ¨quad vs yagi¨???
- And quad versus delta loop?
I hace not so many experiences with delta loops. I just have built only one and the gain was fairly close
to a 6el yagi with 11,4 meter;s boom at same height.
Only front to back ratio on the yagi was slightly better.

- Wich are the technical data of your ¨monster yagi¨ and how much time did you spent on its design an built?
Originally I make my designs using Yagimax (software) and then following my personal experience I make some
changes  and every 4 weeks I change the design to test if it works out better or not.
I don´t spent so much time building an antenna. I can take the tower down to 1,3 meter (less than 1 ft) over the
ground and that way is easy to work on the
rotor below the tower or antenna. To lift them up could take a week.
Having all materials ready I could take a single day to mount a yagi but a quad would take me more time.

- Do you have any advice to those who want to buy their own antennas?

To build a yagi is quite simple and works out pretty well.

- Appart of radio...do you have some other hobbies?
No, I don´t have so much free time. I´m busy with my work as I run this bussiness :  http://www.verendo.nl/home.htm

Nice pictures and story. Hope to view that website with the antennapictures soon. It has been a few years that I made QSOs with Erik. The QSOs between us are so far interesting as my location is at the complete opposit side of the Netherlands.
Erik if you read this, I hope to be back on air soon ! 19AT593 Sebastiaan
