As all things in life: IT DEPENDS....There are advantages and disadvantages, pros and con, and different opinions. Delta Loop vs Yagi or what is better it´s an old topic. I haven´t tested any delta here to be compare with my yagis so I can´t tell you what would be the finest antenna. I have used a lot of yagis so far: from 3 to 5 elements and from mini yagis to long boom ones. To bring an opinion here, I have looking to major web pages dedicated to antennas. This is what I´ve found to be remarked:
- 1) Most antennas are a compromise of one sort or another. Different people make their compromises differently.
- 2) Acording to what I´ve read, main different is signal/noise related. Side by side comparision could take us to a wide variety of conclusions. For some guys advantage is clearly on the side of the deltas and for some others yagi is being always a point ahead. Using laboratory meassures some guys have found a slighty better gain on the deltas over yagis with same number of elements and using same boom length. My opinion is that this different of some decimals of dbs could be hardly noted on our daily dxing. Advantage for a delta over a yagi seems to be on that low noise/signal relation favourable to the deltas. To conclude: deltas are more quiet than yagis.
-3) Most friends don't have a scientific means to measure and evaluate an antenna. What you get is a "general feeling" about its performance over some period of time. It is usually based on what DX they have worked and what kind of signal reports they received.
-4) Even when you have scientific measurement data on an antenna it is often difficult to correlate the data to real world performance, especially on HF frequencies. There are just so many different variables involved in the real world propagation.
My opinion is that everyone should use that antenna that his space limitation allow, nothing more...nothing less. I got that words from a well known ham (take them on mind): ¨MY EXPERIENCE SAYS THAT WHEN CONDITIONS ARE GOOD, THEY ARE GOOD FOR EVERYONE, AND WHEN THEY ARE BAD,THEY ARE BAD FOR EVERYONE. A GOOD DAY WITH A DIPOLE BEATS A BAD DAY WITH A MONSTER YAGI¨.

hello all , well a long time I am lokking for delta loop plain because all station that I can listen with delta loop antena have a good signal in the same moment that I hear a station using a yagi anntena with low signal...of corse there are some anothers things like position, propagation..etc, but normaly I hear better a delta than a yagi.
Now I use 5 elements yagi(home made) and I like this anntena but I want to have a delta loop also to make some tests, so if somebody can help me with a good plain...please send me a e-mail , itacolor@uol.com.br
thanks a lot, really a nice topic Pepe.
